From November 1, to March 31, motorists traveling in one of the 48 departments located in mountain ranges (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Mountains) must have special "winter" equipment, as a consequence of the Mountain law. And contrary to what you might think you don't have to fit your car with snow tires. There are alternatives ...
In fact, you do not have to change your tires for snow or all-season tires if you have a pair of chains or socks in your trunk. Indeed, as indicated on the government site it is either one or the other.
You must be equipped:
- either a pair of metal snow chains in your trunk allowing you to equip at least two driving wheels
- either a pair of snow socks in your boot allowing you to equip at least two driving wheels
- either four winter tires (also called snow tires) or four all-season tires
